8 Celebrities You Probably Did Not Know Received Kidney Transplants

Friends, one thing is clear – Chronic Kidney Disease is menacing and it does not discriminate based upon race, gender, economics or social standing. When it attacks, Chronic Kidney Disease does so swiftly and with immediate devastation to your health as well as lasting and significant disruption to your life.
What you should remember, however, is that whether you consider yourself to be an “Average Joe,” a well known celebrity, or somewhere in between, Chronic Kidney Disease does NOT care! It hits everyone regardless, and it is for that reason everyone with Chronic Kidney Disease along with their loved ones join together to form what is widely known as the “Chronic Kidney Disease Community.”
Here are a few examples of celebrities from our community who have successfully received a Kidney Transplant and were able to keep it functioning for many years. They can serve as a source of inspiration for those with Chronic Kidney Disease who also desire a Kidney Transplant regardless of race, age, or gender.

Tracey Morgan

Comedian and Actor who starred in the hit show “30 Rock.”

How: Tracy’s ex-girlfriend donated a kidney to him in 2011.

After Kidney Transplant: After receiving his Kidney Transplant Tracey went on to work as a stand-up comedian and continued his work on T.V. In June 2014 he was in critical condition at his local hospital for a number of days after a very serious car accident.

George Lopez

Actor, comedian and former star of the “George Lopez Show.”
How: George’s wife gave him a Kidney Transplant in 2005.
After Kidney Transplant: He continues to act and do stand-up comedy.

Sarah Hyland

Actress who is well known as “Haley Dunphy” from the ABC T.V. “Modern Family.”
How: After 10 years of initially being diagnosed with Kidney Dysplasia (an abnormal tissue development in the kidney) she received a transplant in 2012 from her father.
After Kidney Transplant: Sarah continues to act on Modern Family and recently earned a Screen Actor Guild Award  along with the cast.

Sean Elliott

Retired professional basketball player.
How: He received a kidney from his older brother in 1999.
After Kidney Transplant: Sean currently works as a basketball commentator and won a NBA Championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 1999.

Natalie Cole

Daughter of Nat King Cole, she is a true star in her own right. A singer, songwriter, and performer who has received a Grammy Award.
How: Natalie received a Kidney Transplant in 2009.
After Kidney Transplant: She is still active and recently released a new album entitled, Natalie Cole en Español which is sang entirely in Spanish.

Neil Simon

Film producer, playwright and screenwriter.
How: A friend donated to Neil a kidney in 2014.
After Kidney Transplant: At age 87 Neil continues to enjoy the success of his career.

Alonzo Mourning

Former professional basketball player.
How: Mourning was given a kidney from one of his cousins.
After Kidney Transplant: Alonzo came back to play 5 more Seasons and win a 2006 NBA Championship with the Miami Heat.

Amy Purdy

Amy Purdy - Athlete and actress.

Athlete and actress.
How: Her father gave Amy the gift of life in 2000.
After Kidney Transplant: Amy recently won a bronze medal in the Snowboard Cross at the 2014 Winter Paralympics.
